Charles Leclerc Takes a fantastic first Pole Position for Ferrari in Bahrain
By Harry Schofield
Ferrari Claim a spectacular front row lock out headed by new boy Charles Leclerc.
Sebastian Vettel did not have a answer for him finishing 0.294 seconds behind him.
Charles added insult by going even quicker on his last lap, Sebastian could not match his pace.
Hamilton and Bottas occupy the 2nd row of the grid with Verstappen 5th 0.886 off Leclerc’s time.
Kimi Raikkonen in his Alfa Romeo is in 9th place and will certainly be one to watch from the start in tomorrows s race.
Its Game on and Mercedes are 0.294 seconds off the pace, but race pace is a totally different ball game.
When we look at tyre wear, engine modes, and of course how fragile the Mercedes aero package is following other cars,it is going to be important for both the Mercedes to jump the Ferraris in the start tomorrow.
Ferrari are quick, but 1 lap qualifying mode is totally different to consistency in a race, remember 3 engines to last all season, Ferrari needed headlines and they have got them, The championship is not won in the first few races but decisions made today about engine modes, mapping and power output can make good headlines but when we get to the end of the year and mechanical failures happen, common sense always prevails and Mercedes have the thinking to do that, not chase the headlines.
